Getting Started with Desk Organization

Your step-by-step guide to transforming your workspace into an organized, cozy haven

Your Organization Journey

Follow these steps at your own pace. Most people complete the initial setup over one weekend, but there's no rush. The goal is creating sustainable systems that work for you.

1

Assess Your Current Situation

Take photos of your desk from multiple angles. These "before" pictures will be motivating later, but more importantly, they help you see your space objectively.

Ask yourself:

  • What frustrates me most about my current setup?
  • What items do I use daily vs. occasionally?
  • Where does clutter tend to accumulate?
  • What would my ideal workspace feel like?
2

The Great Declutter

Clear everything off your desk and out of your drawers. Yes, everything. Sort items into four categories:

  • Keep & Use Daily: Items that earn their place on your desk
  • Keep & Use Occasionally: Items for drawer storage
  • Relocate: Items that belong elsewhere in your home
  • Discard: Broken items, expired supplies, duplicates

Be honest with yourself. If you haven't used something in 6 months, it probably doesn't need desk space.

3

Choose Your Priority Program

Based on your biggest pain point, select where to start:

You'll eventually implement all four, but starting with your biggest frustration creates immediate relief.

4

Implement Your System

Follow the detailed guide for your chosen program. Take your time—quality setup beats rushing.

Key principles across all programs:

  • Create designated homes for every category of items
  • Keep frequently-used items most accessible
  • Label everything clearly
  • Leave some empty space for flexibility
  • Make it visually pleasing—you're more likely to maintain what you enjoy looking at
5

Establish Your Weekly Reset

Once your systems are in place, schedule your first Weekly Reset. Add it to your calendar as a recurring 15-minute block.

This simple routine is the secret to long-term success. It prevents backsliding and keeps your workspace feeling fresh.

Most members choose Friday afternoon or Sunday evening. Pick whatever time works for your schedule and stick with it for at least one month to build the habit.

6

Refine & Adjust

After one month, evaluate what's working and what isn't. Don't be afraid to tweak your systems.

Maybe you need a different type of divider, or perhaps a category needs to be split into two. Organization is personal—adjust until it feels right for your workflow.

Take new photos to see your progress. Celebrate how far you've come!
